This is the trickest of all the tricky questions.
A year ago, if you would have asked me ‘do you think this gay ship will happen/destiel will happen (for example)?’ I would have looked straight at you and said, ‘no, of course not.’
The ships I (we collectively if you will) want never happen. They never, ever happen, ever. I went in to this (Teen Wolf) knowing in the very bottom of my heart - like I knew the sky was blue and the sun was a star and my mom was my mom - that the ship, whatever ship I shipped, would never happen.
It was going to be Scott and Allison, and Stiles and Lydia or someone else, and that’s the way it was going to be. I finished the series shipping Derek and Stiles so hard my heart hurt, but I knew I couldn’t expect anything from it.
Then, Jeff Davis said the magical words - ‘I could be persuaded.’
Now, here’s the thing. It wasn’t as if I suddenly went, oh, they could happen, we could push for that - it was, if Derek and Stiles were to become canon that could explain so much. Where there plot lines were going for once, because no matter what I did with it, they were always connected. The second season happened, and even more things dropped into place.
Then Jeff talked about Stiles/Derek. Then Hoechlin talked about Stiles/Derek. Then Dylan retweeted a fanvideo with Stiles/Derek. Then Jeff Davis, Hoechlin, and O’Brien looked us all right in the eye and said, ‘it could happen’.
You know what I can’t stand about Supernatural, and why I ultimately left? Whenever you brought up the topic of Destiel, the actors would be uncomfortable - they’d make jokes about it - teases with ‘look at this UST’ and then pull it back and say ‘oh you thought we meant that as sexual tension, even though it was?’ I hated the fact that when I watched the comic con panel videos and the interviews, my ship - the two people that I felt validated in shipping - were mocked, even if they had a ‘profound bond’ and would ‘die’ for each other, and most importantly, want each other to always stay the same.
That hurt. And honestly, I was expecting the same attitude from Teen Wolf, and of course, Teen Wolf slapped me and reminded me that they’re famous for knocking me on my ass with surprises. For once, something I shipped wasn’t being made fun of with the cast, and with interviewers. For once, when people said ‘Sterek’ the cast said ‘Yeah, Sterek!’
There’s the fourth wall, and I want that to stay up, but it’s nice to have a cast that acknowledges me (the fandom) and respects me - reads theories and stories and says ‘I’d say it’s 50/50,’ not ‘no it’ll never happen.’
So yeah. I think it’ll happen.
